Levi’s and NIGO have announced the launch of their third collaboration. Known as an avid collector of vintage denim, NIGO’s partnership with the heritage American clothing manufacturer comes naturally as it celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Levi’s 501®.
“What began as a patent for copper rivets on work pants in 1873 has transformed into one of the most iconic, democratic, and influential pieces of clothing ever created,” Levi’s says of the 501®.
For the series, Levi’s asks NIGO to reimagine his favorite pieces from his personal archive for a new set of offerings inspired the past and recreated for the present and future. Two silhouettes are presented including a pair of Hickory Stripe 501® jeans and a 557XX Hickory Stripe Trucker Jacket.
The 501® utilizes 13 oz, shrink-to-fit selvedge denim specially made for the collection featuring classic details such as Levi’s Red Tab, button shanks, two-horse pull-back patches, and stitched arcuate on the back pockets. The 557XX Trucker Jacket arrives with similar finishes, coming pre-shrunk with specific threads and shanks matching the archival reference piece.
Both pieces are featured in a vintage wash and are Made in Japan utilizing traditional techniques. They also both come with a special-edition Levi’s x NIGO 150th anniversary tote bag and co-branded hangtags.
“As a concept,’The Future is in the Past’ means looking at the past to create for the future. I found teh Hickory Stripe 501® at a vintage store in 1995 and haven’t seen it reproduced since then. Using the past as my reference book, I am honored to bring this archival 501® back during the 150th anniversary,” says NIGO.
