Rei Kawakubo’s COMME des GARÇONS HOMME PLUS has a record for challenging conventionality. Whether it be sculptural garments, hybridized suits or something in between, there’s no way to ever guess what the avant-garde denizen is going to do next. For the brand’s FW23 collection which was revealed at the top of this year, Kawakubo made note of deconstruction and reconstruction – embedded with wire headpieces and drastic shoulders. Now for the Spring/Summer 2024 season, the Japanese designer has taken notes of her reconstruction technique but in a simpler form.
The entire collection involved tailored pieces from full suits to blazers and shorts. But what came down the runway revealed a different vision of tailoring – offering up reconstructed forms, fluid lines, varying fabrics and more. The first several looks took form in classic black. However, the pieces were adapted with wide white collars, extended fabrics on shorts, fringed design details and feathered design details.
When color came into the mix, Kawakubo introduced vibrant green rainforest-printed fabric that comprised complete suits alongside partial fabric integration. Kawakubo then took it a step further by bringing the fabric to life with textured green leaf attachments alongside vine-reminiscent long hair-like attachments. Other eye-catching tailoring pieces included gray and black jackets printed with multicolored animal and floral motifs. Even though the colorful details appeal to the eye, the most exhilarating details of these garments were the sculptured front design details.
Elsewhere in the collection, the pursuit of remixed tailoring continues with clothing and baroque-printed suit separates. To complete the looks, Kawakubo sent double-layered black derbies and whacky hairstyles down the runway – adding fun-fueled flair.
