Francesco Risso‘s world is jam-packed with joy and irreverence, as evidenced by the designer’s Fall/Winter 2023 collection for Marni. Now, the Italian House introduces FW23 Vol. 1, the first array of garments and accessories that are here to brighten up your wardrobe for months to come.
The inaugural volume is typical Risso — colors, prints, textures, cuts, patterns and styling cues clash, but come together for a cohesively retro aesthetic. It’s day-to-night; suiting is served up in black per traditions, but cut boxy and oversized for something more relaxed, an element enhanced by fuzzy mohair scarves served up in ’70s carpet hues.
Likewise, overcoats drop below the knee and cover up anything hidden beneath, which is where the outfit comes to life. Imagine that, underneath your cover-all coat, is Marni’s sneakers that double as lace-printed leggings, a blazer embellished with the kind of confetti trinkets you might put in a piñata, love heart-covered slack pants, chunky fisherman knits, or even a gingham two-piece.
The collection is vast, but it all falls under one joyous umbrella. This is the Marni look, and it’s best showcased by cow print fur coats, floor-length Nirvana-esque scarves, layers upon layers of contrasting stripes and colors, and of course, mohair. For FW23, coziness is key, and this comes to play in look 37 where folds of mohair envelop a model in bundles of pastels and texture.
