Yohji Yamamoto has never been afraid to question the norm, especially when it comes to his adidas Y-3 umbrella. His approach to elevated sportswear consistently combines surprise elements with understated excellence, whether that’s from merging hidden pockets within clean-cut outerwear pieces, or through even deeper philosophies, such as modernizing rustic inspirations.
Now, Y-3’s latest collection for Spring/Summer 2024 presents more of the same, offering an insight into the poised tension at the heart of Y-3’s sporting innovation, along with Yamamoto’s out-of-the-box thinking that often creates genius.
As a whole, the collection takes inspiration from refined workwear-inspired garments. For example, a reimagined adidas Superstar tracksuit has been hit with technical pockets that come alongside adjustable hems and complemented by topographical map piping.
Meanwhile, football plays a huge part in the new line, with a collection of adidas’ Teamgeist soccer jerseys embracing new designs, reminiscent of the first kits that made their way onto the field at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
Juxtaposing Y-3’s athletic approach to the season, however, is the use of floral graphic prints — which are composed of scans of real flowers — and they’re applied to cotton twill fabrications, along with heavy-duty outerwear pieces.
Footwear is also brought to centerstage, with new silhouettes from the imprint coming in the form of the Y-3 Stan Smith and Y-3 Country, with both crafted in collapsable leather with piped details. Additionally, SS24 marks the return of the Y-3 Gendo, along with its Gendo Run counterpart, with the latter taking on a high-top silhouette and a new outsole that’s hit with a contrasting floral graphic and sporting tread.
