3sixteen’s Fall/Winter 2023 collection began with a trip to the Noguchi Museum in Astoria, New York. There, creative directors Andrew Chen and Johan Lam were captivated by Isamu Noguchi’s stone sculptures — specifically, the shapes, colors, materials and treatments that comprise them. Galvanized, they tacked their mood board with the late artist’s creations, and the collection began to take form.
The designers later visited their manufacturers in Jaipur, India, to form a stronger bond with the people behind their garments. While there, Chen and Lam stopped at Jantar Mantar, an entourage of massive astronomical and astrological instruments made from stone that played a significant role in carving Noguchi’s founding pillars. “This experience brought the entire collection full circle for us,” Chen said in a statement.
Pulling tones from Noguchi’s portfolio, including creamy alabaster, charcoal onyx, black granite and pale pink marble, the brand crafted custom textiles to form its seasonal wares. Inside the collection, collared jackets with foldover pockets appear in natural hues; knit cardigans boast tasteful texture, and a button-up, varsity-inspired coat with “3S” lettering takes the cake as the collection’s hero.
Down the line, a blue patchwork button-up shirt toys with a vast shade range, while straightforward iterations are made thick to combat tougher climates. Sweaters, in strong monotone finishes, offer further insulation, and a quilted puffer coat adds more dimension to the collection. Utilitarian pants feature dual-tone constructions, and a selection of denim lets the statement-making silhouettes speak. Thick scarves, meanwhile, become key accessory layers.
